Geeta Press in Gorakhpur has got a rare honor. Received the prestigious Peace Prize established in the name of Mahatma Gandhi for the year 2021. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself revealed this on Twitter. Geeta Press is known as an organization with a history of 100 years in propagating Gandhi’s principles of peace and social harmony. As part of this, Gandhi Peace Prize will be awarded to Geeta Press.
The Gandhi Peace Prize is an annual award instituted by the Government of India in 1995 on the occasion of Gandhi’s 125th birth anniversary. The award is open to all irrespective of nationality, race, language, caste, religion, or sex. The award amount is Rs. 1 crore. A certificate of appreciation, a plaque, and a traditional dress are also presented.
Organizations like ISRO, Ramakrishna Mission, Grameen Bank of Bangladesh, Vivekananda Centre, Kanyakumari, Akshayapatra, Bangalore, Ekal Abhiyan Trust, India, and Sulabh International are among the past recipients of the Gandhi Peace Prize. Not only that, South Africa’s late former Chief Nelson Mandela, Tanzania’s former Chief Julius Nyerere, Dr. AT Ariya Rathne, Sarvodaya Shramdana Udyam, Dr. Gerhar Fischer, Baba Amte, Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. John Hume, Wa Clav Havel, Desmond Tutu, Chandy Prasad Bhatt, Sasakwa, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The jury chaired by the Prime Minister unanimously decided to give the Gorakhpur Press.
